Joao. He can do anything and has the most interesting storyline. The only downsides are rocco is hard to get to 20 knots and getting jumped by pirates when you are unprepared.

My second is Peitro, but his storyline is fast and easy.

Ernst. In my oppinion he doesn't have all that much to do besides making a map. All the other characters drag you around too much. You either get chased by Spanish or other fleets like every time. Which means a lot of preparation before you can finally do other stuff.

It's fun to make Ernst a skilled swordfighter and gunner. Make money, sail around the world about 100 times to get all the ports at maximum rates. Make some of the countries poor and get redicilously large amount of ingots from 'rich' countries when you take down their merchant ships. :p

It's just too bad ya can't freeze time sometimes because it already takes about a good year or 2 to sail the world, stop in every town.

As for the crew.. I think it's fun to take any reliable pirate (if any) on my journey. Ofcourse they need to have the appropiate skills like Gunnery + Navigation.
There are some nice ones allong the coasts of Africa and in the Carribian at the start of the game, kinda.

And ofcourse it's fun to have Idin Leis and Khayr Ad-Din in the fleet as well. But also Ulgi Ali, Mohammed Syarook, ... etc.

Some others are sometimes quite hard to get because they aren't too often vagebond sailors when you defeat them. Or willing to go with you.
Like, Vittorio Dorio, Victor Russel, Raphael Selran, Palah Abdul, ...

I agree with elfut on the loyalty thing if I play Italy or Turkey. However, I also agree with the uneasiness I get when I think about the hordes of the Ottoman Empire sweeping across the globe.

When I first played NH, Otto was my favorite, probably because I had an obsession with England. Many years later, I now enjoy the freedom of Conti or Franco. I like stalling for a couple of years in the campaign to put a good dent in enemy battle fleets and make a mark for my country. After my country gets domination (which is more difficult to do for Italy, but is not impossible) I then go about my business of the campaign.

My least favorite character would have to be Catalina. She's a certifiable nutjob who commits murder and treason based on an unsubstantuated rumor that she heard in a bar. To avenge her brother and fiance she racks up a four digit body count of innocent sailors who had nothing to do with their deaths. She also lets the pirates talk her into kidnapping Lucia. She's not only evil and crazy but she's stupid too.

Pietro Conti is definitely my #1 fav. As long as you don't go for the Medallion you can do whatever you want in your game without getting harrassed by your best friend for whatever next step you need to do.

Followed by Khayr ad-Din I'd say.. For personal reasons I might explain if I see anyone post around here, other than me, this seems rather calm. 😛

I did make Italy take off in this last game I made, but it took forever... lots of gold... and Turkey as a 100% enemy...
Made some gold, invested in Santa Cruz early in game until they sold gold, raised my rank, then made some trading with big ships, lots of Gold and Cheese back and forth. Eventually made it to the point where I could invest in many ports allied with Turkey and neutral ports. That alone makes MANY ports. Eventually your country wakes up and the merchants can help maintain that order of things, too, although a poor Turkey made Portugal and England much stronger in my game, and kinda killed Holland. It's less balanced, but Italy is still much stronger.

I haven't brought Italy to domination and I am not sure if I will, I am already to the point where ad-Din and Leis are both in my team and where a worthy opponent or challenge is hard to find.

Hello, everyone. I'm a newcomer to this board, but I've been playing UWNH for quite a while now. I have three favorite characters:

I love the insane amount of money you can make as Ali, which allows you to build some kick-ass fleets, and wreak havoc on the economies (and fleets) of the other countries. And having the might of the Ottoman treasury at your disposal is not bad at all either. Something I'm not so fond of, though, is having to go all the way to Istanbul for a tax permit which is a hassle when you're trying to run the Europe-Africa-India-Japan route before your last permit expires. And his scenario can be quite annoying, too. For God's sake, if the dear girl wants to be a waitress in Basra, let her be! 😉

I like the freedom Ernst's scenario gives you. As long as you don't go to Chang-An, you're basically free to roam. What I don't like so much is that you can't visit the japanese ports until pretty late in the game, so you have to wait to get your Tekkousens and your cheap silver.

I like Cat because:

A. She's a hottie

B. She kicks some serious ass, and

C. She's a psycho nutjob with a hell of a grudge! B)

True, having the Spanish Armada hounding you all the time isn't that much fun, but once you get the hang of it, you can whoop their behinds with your hands tied.

The other characters I haven't really played as much, with the exception of Joao's scenario, which annoys me to no end, what with Rocco and his stupid antics. Also, being nagged for the millionth time about finding Atlantis makes me want to get all Khayr ad-Din on someone's posterior. Speaking of old Redbeard, I used to loathe the big bully and his pal Idin Leis, but once I managed to smack them around and get them on my lineup, I found they're really all soft inside. They just had troubled childhoods, the poor dears.

Cheers!

Well I think they can add a character creation interface in this game.the original game has only one female char 😛

I like otto....but Joao and Cat is better as they set sail to open sea much easier....

and I'm wondering why France is not in game since they also one of the naval power....(sorry my history is not good because I'm not from europe...)

I've finished all character in this game....darn I still remember playing this game for 2 months straight before my final year exam in 96 lol...
