Most of the NW player believe figureheads are only used to reduce accident. True, the more expensive one, the lower chance to meet storm. But I just found that the Big Eagle figurehead could improve the sight, to enable you to see farther. However, a 5000G telescope will do a better job.(I made experiments by reloading record)

So I think there are specific uses of each figurehead. Some of other players also have tests about them:

hero: improve combat ability(rush damage)
Dragon: improve cannon power
commodore: improve condition of your crews when u lower the food ration

above 3 were tested by someone else, so I DON'T guarantee it's 100% true.

there was another topic on this some time ago - the commodore improves leadership ability of the captain and so forth. I thought the eagle had something to do with speed, and either the lion or unicorn helped with fighting/boarding.
