You can get Full Rigged Ship from Antwerp or Hamburg after you invested both economy and industry to 1000. Some other players believe Barge and Tekkousen are two other great ships.
You can find Barge in Dublin and Bristol (you can only buy these ships after the economy and industry are 1000) and Tekkousen in Nagasaki and Sakai.

I have never used that Japanese ship to sail around. I only saw it from recommendations from other websites. I only use Full Rigged Ship all the time. 1 ship with 500 crews, 120 cannon and 9 others with 45 crews. I normally buy gold from Maderia and the island below, sell it at ports around EU and buy beads to sell again at those 2 ports.

I dont see what the big deal is with the japanese ship, it has 150 crew and i cant remember how many guns, but with a good navigation it gan get prietty fast, and it has the same SNES sprite as the Flemish Galleon and Light Galley

damn, 500 crew?! u will probably drain all your cash on food supplies when attempting a "around the world in 80 days" cruise.

and no one mentioned anything about the frigates - quite affordable to people on a lower budged.

actually the whole question wasn't very .. specific - better than ven in WHAT??

wind power/speed?
firepower? ( with that our wonderfull galleons win with their 70 cannon *grin – just be sure to have double that amount of crew to fire em…  🙂
tacking/manoverabily?
training?
if you want to teach some of your other captains how to sail, (ie. to improve their seamanship/leadership) i'd use a la-realle (spelling?) - also a hidden ship (bordeax) and the pinnace right? or when starting a new game and you are naturally low on budget, a Nao. Carrack only for advanced sailors! (lotsa cargo space on that for trading 🙂 or food storage then if ur a cheater :()

yes! when you get fed up with those pirates :}

as trader you sail around allot to
1. build up some cash
2. train your other captains to sail better (its auto with trading, since you kinda have to move from port A to B ) and become more loyal, so they can handle future battleships and not run away with it (loyalty)
3. run away from pirates
& while waiting for whatever battleship to build, trade more for cash to hire crew & get lotsa food...
4. moor most of your trading vessels at a capital port.
5. take a defeat pirates mission
6. go get ‘em.
THEN sometime when you maybe want to continue to complete the game...
7. come back to port - swap ships to trading vessels since you'll be likely be traveling allot again and will want to pay less for food/crew.

500 crew is not a lot. If u have 10 ships, only 1 with 500 crew, 1 ship for food, 1 ship for water. u'll get at least 15-20 days worth of travelling, and the rest, more than 6700 space for gold.
It might not travel as fast as the japanese ship (I still haven't got the chance to buy one. I like the cargo space of more than 1000)
😛
