ok, this is my second runthrough of ernst, so i'm taking it easy but discovered a few things

originally i thought only one 'star' class discovery was shown, but aparrently professor mordes gets to call me the worlds greatest adventurer twice

its amazing that since he was just a professor in holland, he NEVER has gotten in a fight, with his attack rating of 0 exp

BUT.
i chased down a spainish merchant (carlos i think) and i actually beat him! (after 5 tries) and got to level 3 attack, and got licky and attacked bernal, on the 3rd try i had him down to 30, then he pwned me...:( , but i only decided to do this whilst i wait for hamburg to get working on the FRS, i want to see how many days i can get oit of that, i can get 88 on 2 Xebecs with 41 each ( i cot ataced by a something down under and i ditched a junk

maybe i need to get crusaders armor..and the blue crecent, it seems to b e ungodly cheap, maybe thats why its al the rage amoung pirates...

yea, now i know what it feels like to the people i kill in one hit with Otto...

yep, this game has taught me patience, and new combinations of cuses

yes i am writing these between attempts at bernal, seroiusly ernst needs to get drunk more

wow, that was short..but i have a throry, the lash-strike-lash-thrust-lash throry
this theory states, like all entertaining punch-card games from 1st centrury BCE, they often get into loops which will screw you up considering you never know when it will snap out of it, resulting in a major can of you know what

i move to find a hex code to allw saves between arttacks

new throry, 99% of the time your opponent will attack first with lash

ok, i almost won, here's some instruction:
1, soften opponent with cannon
2.uuh, nevermind

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!! i didnt duel him, i beat him down to 24 crew, then he fled, but as soon as the battle ended i battled him again, he didnt have time to reload his crew and i got him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 YAY!!!!!!!!!! a combat level 3 dutch professor with a galleon of 180 can beat off a combat level 11 spainish knight

another 3 levels!

mmnmmm now i need another 5 ingots, on to someone else!

Hmm,
I've discovered a way to always win the duels when playing with a SNES emulator (I'm using ZSNES), just configure a key to rewind the emulator, so wait your opponent attack, rewind and select the proper defense card. To attack do the same, if the opponent defend, rewind and use the proper attack card.:P

Even better is to use the SNES9x emulator, which allows you to save anywhere, anytime in nine different slots. Save before choosing attack, and if it is blocked, reload the save and try a different one.

Try Ali, I have him to currently 15 Sailing, 31 battle, and I'm playing regular SNES as well, no emu. I plan on getting him to all 100s, then finish off the investing it ports, currently around 43,000 Piracy with 23,000 Merchant Fame, and 8000 Adventure Fame, hehe.. My best character I played was of course, Catalina, I had her to 59 battle, and 31 sailing, People surrendered so fast it wasnt funny.. LOL

Ernst can ofcourse also do the one-hit kills. He just needs A LOT of practice. And what's a better practice target then some silly merchants who have very little swordfighting skills as well. :p
There are quite a lot of them out there that have around 10 or less. :}

About the techniques in swordfighting. I think that they usually start to swing with the type of weapon it is specialized in. Some weapons are better for lashing, thrusting, striking. That is usually the one they use first.
I think the most merchants only have sabers and other quality D, perhaps C, weapons. Most of these merchants starts with a Lash.
Up to swordsmanship lvl 10 -20 or so it can be quite difficult to kill an enemy. After that it's getting easier and easier.

I always buy a Crusader sword + armor when I have the money, then i start the fighting when I have a decent boat. Usually start with Carracks, Galleons, then off to the Venetian Galeass, Full-rigged.
