thx Greg, although:
- could you change this category to 'UW remake'?
- & what i meant with being able to add my own categories is so that i don't need to keep bothering you with it.
eg. we'd need some category to discuss anything combat related - ship to ship/to land as well as discussing port development - having everyting as seperate topics in here will look a mess.

i typed out this whole 'development speach' the other day, but i can't find the textfile now :s

For now i'll stick to telling you about version 0.1
http://geocities.com/rianvoogt
http://geocities.com/rianvoogt/uw/download.html

[if you visited there already today you may want to clear your browser cache/cookies to refresh the page completely.]

To run the game, simply extract the zipfile to a folder of your choise, then run the executable.
take note that only a few ports are 'active' & use <enter> to get on/off ships. 'Esc' to quit/save.

you my find pirate encounters - its simply based on the old 'pirates!tm' - the 2 captains will dual it out.
Same for attacking caribbean ports. just remembered, only caribbean ports may be attacked. i was thinking of having the caribbean work like pirates: <attack to take over>
& the rest of the world's ports like uncharted waters: < investments>
you may also notice that you can only enter capital ports in "uncharted water's style"
[simply cause it would take years to develop each port..]
not much going on in the capitals yet...

Development:
i'll have a whole list of issues ready by wednesday - tomorrow's our year-end function, then you lot can start helping.

To be able to edit anything you would need to download a copy of 'rpg maker 2003'
[i know there's a new version out, but its combat system works different]

The port-code is finished, however, it requires a lot of copy/paste/edit;

eg. you can copy havana [caribbean]'s event/code & paste it on the port of Tortuga, then you simply would need to change all the variables in that code from '0001:havana' to '0005:tortuga'...
easy, just a lot to do since you need to edit 5+ pages on each encounter because of the different countries.
if everyone could just do one port & mail me the event, i can put it all together nicely in the next version. i'll put a set-by-step tutorial or something up soon.

Investments work, you can see port's alliances change, but no money is yet removed from the player. therefore Algier's investment code needs work.

I have changed the forum name, but I'll have to look into it a little bit about assigning a moderator or someone like that.

I'm out of town right now so I'll have to do it when I get back home.

But I'm not sure if what you are talking about can be accomplished (the sub-groups within this category) and I am also not sure if a moderator would be able to do that anyway.

I'll have to look into it some.

In the meantime, I hope this will do nicely.

Just downloaded the game. But when I try to run the exe-file, there is a pop-up screen telling me that rpg-maker 2003 runtime package is missing.

sorry about that - its what i get for doing things in a hurry & not testing it on another system which didn't have the program. what i shared was the source, not the 'compilation'. i made one now, but the end result is a 15mb installer - too big to share /upload with each update.

might i suggest you do a once-off download the actual 31mb program from say:
http://www.gamediscovery.com/game-design/rpg-maker-2003-download.asp
or
http://www.nisnevich.com/pse/download/game_development_downloads.htm
instead, so we could all work with smaller files.

I try to do so. But generally I prefer games I can play straight from my usb-stick in the break of my work. Games like UWNH, C-evo or Atlas (if I ever would understand how to play it)

you may be right, i read over the features of this forum & i didn't see any mention of such a thing
http://www.tsmf.jigsnet.com/content/view/105/

i think phpbb would be able to.
http://www.phpbb2.de/ demo: http://www.phpbb3.de/
but don't worry, i'll try make the best of what we have - can't be picky now - the service is free 🙂

Just as an example - i see 2 categories in the posts above already:
1. Announcements [to let ppl know where to get the new version updates..]
2. Troubleshooting [discuss all problems that might arise from people using say win95 etc.]

I just installed that rpg maker 2003. That brought me to: [img size=285]http://www.unchartedwatersnewhorizons.com/components/com_mamboboard/uploaded/images/UWR.jpg[/img]

that is a standard png/picture file from the program.
All i can think of is that their installer is corrupt [try a different site?]
or you might have downloaded an 'update file' eg. [2003_Update_105e.exe 23mb] instead of the main thing i'm still running version 1.08, & i see only a version 1.09 here:
http://rpgmaker.thaiware.com/download/109/rm2k3109aefull.exe 25mb

- but i've uploaded that file for you here: http://geocities.com/rianvoogt/misc/system4.png
<must go into ../rpg2003/RTP/System/*.*>
hope it helps.

Announcement: I've updated my "speach" at http://geocities.com/rianvoogt/uw/main.html

Same sad song. I stole the pics and dropped the game and the rpg-maker. Perhaps another time...
