You need to be approaching world domination to see the strange things like a fleet with a couple of barges and the rest as balsa (or some such tiny ship).

I know this discussion took place a while ago but I think that when the enemy fleets are composed of tiny ships is also related to the fact that they are running out of money so they can't afford ggod ships anymore. 🙂 I noticed that after beating the same enemy often. The first time I defeated Khayr-ad-din, he came back with an even bigger Venitian Galleass fleet but after 3 or 4 times, he started getting a smaller and smaller fleet.
I can picture him counting his coins and saying, "I better avoid this scurvy dawg (place your name here) next time I go to Sea, otherwise I'll be able to only afford balsa boats."
The funny thing is that when you meet him again, he already forgot that you sunk him 5 times. 😀

I think the explanation about Khayr is that someone else took his fleet and he took over the fleet of a different pirate that was defeated. This is more apt to happen if you defeat two pirates in the same month.

I have preyed on Khayr dozens of times in the same game, after all he has the best levels most of the time. I hate to see him replaced by Walweik.

In a way the countries are running out of money as you approach world domination because their profit is limited to the home port.

In most games you will notice that Italy is reduced to the just the home port within the first year. They still improve their fleet if you defeat one of their starting fleets. Even though in a real world situation they would eventually run out of money, I doubt the game tracks the fortunes of every character and every country.

This seems to be a glitch, and the graphics become a little glitchy as you ally with all the ports in the world. It is only the defeated fleets that are updated, the starting fleets that have not been attacked don't change.

Any information that I provide is based on the SNES version unless otherwise specified. I have thousands of hours into New Horizons and I have played it since it was released in the US on the SNES.

Historically, the Italian port of Genoa started to decline after those constant conflicts with Venice.
The Doges were very sneaky and they would have practically controlled the entire trade of the Mediterranean Sea but the Ottoman Empire got powerful as well so they chipped the Venitian supremacy bit by bit and thanks to the sneaky Doge during the 4th Crusade, the Turks finally took Constantinople and if it weren't for the Knights of St-John, they would have controlled everything.
The battle of Malta pretty much kept the status Quo.

If you want to increase your interest in the game I suggest to read the following books (I own a copy of the first two and I'm planning on buying the third one):
1- The Knights of the Order (the story of the Knights of St-John from Jerusalem to Rhodes to Malta) by Ernle Bradford.
2- Venice, a Maritime Republic by Frederic C. lane
3- The Sultan's Admiral; the life of Barbarossa by Ernle Bradford
4- The great betrayal; The Story of the 4th Crusade also by Ernle Bradford.

Since I read those books, I got even more fascinated with Medieval trading.

I forgot another great book I also bought is Dangerous Tastes, The Story of Spices by Andrew Dalby.
It's a recipe book but it explains the origin of every spices, the history, the battles for them, etc.
I got so interested by it that I started going to Indian grocery stores just to see different spices. I even bought some. 😀

When I hear the names Saffron, Musk, Aloeswood, Sandalwood, Frankincense, Myrrh, Cardamom, Balsam, etc., It makes me want to buy a ship and start trading! 😀

Once you learn about these, you discover that the Silk Road, the Amber Road, the Spice road are all connected either by sea or terrestrial routes or both. It's a non-stop thirst for knowledge.

Then you come back to NewHorizon so you can trade and pirate again!

After that you want to buy the book To the End of the Earth; Tre Great Travel and Trade Routes of Human History by Franck & Browstone.
It's a vicious circle but I love it.
I keep looking for interesting books on the subject at my local library then I look on Amazon and buy them. I got this last one for a ridiculous price of $2 + $5 shipping. 😀

My next search will be on Genoa, Andrea Doria, etc.
I know there was a character named Doria that fought a few naval battle against some Venitian admirals and also against Khayr-ad-Din (Barbarossa) In a famous battle near Lepanto (not 100% sure).

I am looking for a particular port, but when I go to the spot where it is supposed to be there is no port. How do I get the port to appear?

The only time that happened to me was when i've played with Ernest and tried to get to a Japanese port. If that's the case, you cant get there yet. You need to do something else (that i don't remember)

Yeah, there are three ports in Ernest's game that you can't find until the end of the game basically (40,500 adventure fame). The third is Changan, and the two Japanese ports.

This is my main peeve with this game, you make it where the cartographer can't find a port...COME ON MAN!! xD

This also happens to Joao, but it is triggered at around 30,000 adventure fame when he can finally find the Japanese ports (just the two in his game).

Yeah I got the impression Ernest isnt such a good cartographer...
Anyway LordSmurf, if thats your case, you dont have to go there now. What you need is to increase your adv fame. You can do it the way you chose to, but the best thing to do is sail around in the dark areas, find vilages, and report the vilages to some noble guy and the dark areas to Mercator.

I started an interesting game (with Otto).
I recruited the usual guys, then I bought 4 Pinnaces and equipped them with 15 cannons and 30 crew each.
I wanted to test their capabilities so I attacked the first merchant fleet I saw. It happened to be Guido Benzo, which I affectionately call Mario. 😀
Anyway on my first attempt, I ran out of cannonballs so he escaped at the end. I caught up 3 more times with him, chasing him all the way to Cape Town and I finally sunk his ship but all the other ships were long gone.

I sold my pinnaces and bought 5 kansens with 40 crew each. On my way back to Europe I fought Idin Leis ( with 5 Galleons)just for the fun of it and I defeated him! 3 of my ships stupidly rushed him and ended up with 0 crew at the end but they blocked his galleon. All I had to do was finish him with my 2 ships (Otto and George)left.

I now have 5 used Atakabunes with 40 cannons and 100 crew for the flagship and 75 for the other 4 ships.
I've already crushed 4 merchant fleets. 😀
