I've played a lot with Uncharted Waters back when I had a NES. I used to rent it a the video club and play it all week end long (18 hours a day), then I bought a used version.
I can't believe how hard the first one was and how treacherous it was to navigate. I had to use a real map to figure out where I was.
It kind of gave you an authentic feel about the game though.

One thing I miss about the first one is to be able to customize the ship like adding 2 or 3 masts, etc.
Also, it was easier to defeat a more powerful fleet by concentrating on the enemy's flagship since you could control all the ships yourself. I wish the option to control all the ship was available as well in New Horizon.

That mast customization is about the same as the hull customization in NH, although it doesn't affect speed it does affect durability. The big difference in those choices (mast and hull) is the price, so in a way that is still in NH.

I liked controlling every ship too. It would be so much easier to raise a mates battle levels if you could control all the ships!!

Any information that I provide is based on the SNES version unless otherwise specified. I have thousands of hours into New Horizons and I have played it since it was released in the US on the SNES.
