Yeah, I talk about it on gamefaqs and here and I'm too lazy to check to see what I've mentioned here. :p

You can definitely get that scene in the PC version, it was a tiny bit different, but the result is the same. I was playing Joao on the PC version at the time. You may have to talk to someone before re-entering the building...maybe I posted it somewhere here when I was checking.

Any information that I provide is based on the SNES version unless otherwise specified. I have thousands of hours into New Horizons and I have played it since it was released in the US on the SNES.

That's great. Will try it out next time I start a new game with Joao.

On a separate issue with Joao's scenario, does anyone know exactly how long it takes for Conti to find his Poseidon staff after Joao goes to massawa to elicit the response 'all we can do ia wait'? Is this wait time random? I always left it probably far too long before coming to trigger the next step...

At one time I was sure it was 26 days, but I think that may be the minimum.

I ran into difficulty when I was playing the PC version, and part of the problem is the time flow in the PC version. My first complaint was that I couldn't set a specific time at the lodge/inn, which is much better in the SNES version.

Anyway, all I can tell you is that you MUST have enough time to enter certain buildings in sequence. At the moment I can't tell you for sure which ones, but you will get a different response from certain buildings and then eventually you will get the sequence right...probably.

That has to be one of the pickiest sequences there is, and I don't know how to check it other than making sure I visit the places away from Massawa that I'm supposed to visit and then keep trying the buildings in Massawa for different responses.

On the SNES I have completed the entire sequence in about 32 game days total, from start to finish.

oh I must be doing something wrong. My wait time is 6 mth to a year. This game alone I have spent 4 months + maxing out port economy in middle east, india, se asia and China and still waiting for the staff!~ Guess I need to figure out that sequence else it's going to bug me...

I quit being so lazy, here are my notes:
At 16000 adventure fame and a visit to certain ports (I triggered the event in a South American port) you will trigger another visit from Ali. He will suggest a
visit to Massawa. After a trip Massawa and a visit to the palace in Massawa a discussion will lead them to Lisbon. After visiting Joao's home in Lisbon they will return to Massawa and another visit to the palace. Leave Massawa and return after about 25 days (or a visit to another Mid-Eastern port tells you about the fleet). It works best if you visit a Mid-Eastern port and you get a dialogue about a Turkish fleet.

At this point you should trigger events in Massawa, but I think you have to visit certain buildings to trigger getting the staff and another event involving the Turkish fleet.

coming back to luck I verified now that starting from 1000gc and making 51% donations ie 510, 250, 123, 60, 30, 14, 7, 3, 1, 1, 1 will give you luck of 100 even when starting at 0. Towards the end of the donation series I deviated from the 51 percent model but still got the results.

As I mentioned earlier, in the PC version at least, if you start donating at 100gc total wealth in 25 percents you can get your luck to 90 plus percents and if you still keep donating small amounts it stays at 90 plus percents, so there is something about a 51 percent donation at higher value total wealth eg 1000 gc that probably does something to achieve that last few percents luck increase.

I think we are getting into really small print stuff here so I think I will just stick to this series of donation each time and saves me getting the calculator out each time "p

I was thinking, I should mention that some events trigger by fame and entering any building at any time, but some events require specific daylight hours (I think those are considered 8am - 8pm).

In the SNES version time advances in 20 minute increments, but can be as large as 1 hour and 20 minutes. In the PC version time advances in 30 minute increments, but can be as large as 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Often the trigger is a visit to the cafe/pub, but some events trigger by visiting other buildings and still others will trigger by visiting any building.

Thanks for the info about the donations.

Thanks for the clarification. Actually in my PC version the time increments in 20 mins also, but can be up to 1:40 which is quite annoying when that happens.

Tried the Joao game opening church donation to good effect too. thx! Also the massawa incident seems to require going to the marketplace, at least after I tried that things just worked...

Oh Crap! I reversed the versions for the time changes. Thanks for posting the correction.

It does seem that the only time you EVER get the 20 minute interval is if you happen to enter a building at 11:40pm because you will always get a 12:00am (midnight). I hope I got that right. 🙂
