Usually the clerk of the inn/lodge will be right in front of the door. When you talk to the clerk (innkeeper) there should be two options unless you are in one of the six capitol ports and then the only option you have is to check in. The other option should be "port info" which will tell you if they are allied with anyone and the percentage of that alignment.

There should also be a second "person" that is at a table in the inn and you can "gossip" with that person and sometimes you may be able to recruit or hire a mate. That is all that is in the lodge/inn even though the room may be larger in some ports than in others.

What version of the game are you playing? It seems odd that it would be dim, because it should be just like any other building that you enter as far as lighting. Are you emulating, playing on a console, or playing the PC version?

Any information that I provide is based on the SNES version unless otherwise specified. I have thousands of hours into New Horizons and I have played it since it was released in the US on the SNES.
