OK, I have verified this 'Crazy debt collection bug' on the PC version.
Basically the principle is to generate a baseline number by going to the guild and accepting a transport goods or buy goods job. Say 'no' to the market merchant when asked if will accept the job. Then go to the guild again, waiting for a 'debt collection' job to appear (jobs refreshes daily). Accept the debt collection job. Do not go to the bank. Go instead to the pub to treat. Someone will tell you the name of the person to be pursued. Hunt him down and he will give you 5 x (transport baseline number) ingots, where transport baseline number can be as high as 140 in early game, yielding 700 ingots by the first month!
Practically, I tried it out on Joao. Accepted the Transport goods job on 18 May 1522 at 4am (transport goods from Algiers to Tripoli). Reached Algiers on 21 May. Bough a used light galley (to maximise the amount the market trader will ask me to transport), remodelled both ships to minimum crew. Went to see market trader on 22 May, asked to transport 110 units of linen cloth I think. Refused the job. Sold the light galley (no longer needed). Waited till 23 May to have debt collection job in guild. Sailed straight for Seville (as I already knew from previous saved game that person pursued is Tony Buciarga Spanish Battle Fleet). In pub, treating 1 drink will result in someone telling you 'Tony Buciarga is leading a battle fleet, I do not know his whereabouts, maybe try the waitress'. wait a few days and he will appear in the pub/inn in Seville. I found him 3 Jun in pub. Gossip with him and he gave me 550 ingots and told me to 'leave him alone'...
Depending on which day we reach the market place, the transport baseline number changes following the sequence 140, 120, 110, 90, 70, 60 during the early game. Meaning that if I was desperate to get 700 ingots, I simply had to wait 4 more days before going to see the chief trader in the market in Algiers. Of course it is important that there is enough empty space on the fleet with 20% empty space to spare otherwise the chief trader will come up with a lower number for transportation, which will reduce the debt collection amount.
Obviously money isn't too hard to obtain in this game but this bug/cheat could save a few trips of art trading...
