AWESOME!! I lost all of my information when Sandy blew through, and then the holidays hit, and I'm just now starting to play again.

Almost everything in the game, at least formulas that we have figured out is divided by 5! Thanks for the great information.

I wasn't sure exactly what you meant about the bug, but I got the idea and I tried it with Luka Ullman. I hired him at the inn for 10 and his loyalty was 10. Every time I chose wages and keyed in a number between 10 and 20 he would thank you and his loyalty increased by 1 each time. I don't know if other characters might increase by more, but to raise Luka from 10 loyalty to 80 loyalty took 70 wage increases. Still that is great information.

Do you have more!?

Any information that I provide is based on the SNES version unless otherwise specified. I have thousands of hours into New Horizons and I have played it since it was released in the US on the SNES.

You want to receive loyalty?! Raise the salaries of the navigator up to 2000 gold. In game it is possible, and I did not try, but the idea is. However, the contract with cartografy from cities Palma will be more interesting...

Haha, I knew it would work. BTW, I'm the one who mentioned this. Giving 10, then 11,12, 13,14,15,16,17,18,19,etc, but I didn't know it would work if you offer the same amount as long as it was more than 10.
Also, there are codes to modify your main character and mates attributes. Those are useful when you want to hire Pilly Reis early in the game.

I've been using some of them since I finished the game so many times. It added some replayability.
I have more codes but I just realized that I didn't add my Nintendo folder to my new laptop so I'll have to dig it out.

Another formula you may have figured out Chaoyun2k is regarding maximum discount according to rank in the market place. We know dukes get 50% discount in market place if main character has negotiation skills; or if book-keeper has negotiation skills / accounting skills; but only 25% discount if both main character and bookeeper has neither skills.   Maximum discount is actually governed by (1 + rank) * 5% where rank = 1 for page,  9 for duke.  Then we have the full explanation for LUCK that I have been puzzling about: It's actually a 2 part explanation as I thought. Firstly, as we all know, donating MAY increase luck. donating >1/2 of total wealth can lead to luck increase of 10 points; >1/3 can increase it by 9 points, >1/4 by 8 points, >1/5 by 7 etc up to >1/11 increasing by 1 point. However it transpires that donating DOES NOT always increase luck, which brings us to the second rule: Probability of donation increasing luck = INT(Donation / 100)/5, which means that a donation of 500 gp or more will have 100% chance of increasing luck while 400-499 gp donation will only have 80% chance of increasing luck. Donating 99 gp or less is a waste of time as it has a 0% chance of increasing luck. Also, in the PC version, there is an option to 'Pray'. Praying has a 50% chance of increasing luck by 1, but this is only effective for a single try upon visiting the building. In other words, during the same visit to the building, pressing 'Pray' over and over again will do nothing to your luck, only the first prayer counts.

Yup Igor, I remember now, I think you first mentioned this which led me to look into the loyalty issue...

Yeah, siz, but why cost yourself that amount EVERY MONTH if you can hire a mate at 10 and use this trick to get him to completely loyal before ever leaving port! It is a bit more tedious than sailing until his stats go negative.

Hmm, the Negotiation skill is one of the things that doesn't seem to work like it is supposed to and it actually seems that if a bookkeeper at least has the accounting skill his negotiation works as if he had the negotiation skill (actually a bookkeeper without accounting is pretty useless). I hope that makes sense.

In the SNES version praying has become studying and can be used in ANY Round Earth office. It also has a chance to increase luck...and I use that to pass time if I want to micro-manage and leave after midnight instead of 8 or later (avoid the water and food cost). That was one of the things I didn't like when playing the PC version, although more realistic you had to remember that you couldn't enter some churches/mosques depending on which character you were playing.

Still, I remember that you can max luck with Joao by entering the RE/church and choosing the donate option instead of accepting the money.

That trick requires you to enter an amount greater than their wages, but less than 10 more than their wages. In other words, if a mate's wages are at 20 you have to use 20 plus a number less than 10 on the SNES version. You are telling them the wage amount, not the increase amount. 😀

Yup the donate back 1k to church when offered for Joao is brilliant and saves lots of trouble to try determine luck.

Now that we know the secret to increase loyalty without a true wage rise the lodge mates suddenly become more appealing. But remember this can only bring loyalty up to 80. Still may drift down again if main character's leadership is too much lower than mate's best stat but leadership should quickly increase with navigation and mates don't desert if loyalty more than 50 during war and don't threaten to leave unless loyalty less than 30 I think.

One last trick with loyalty is that his loyalty starts at 10 when hired from inn. Allow him to leave you in the port you hired him and rehire him same wage, loyalty now 20. Repeat process and loyalty now 30. Then now offer him fake wage rise to bring it to 80... How sneaky is that~!

Ah, I think that loyalty of 50 is new!

The trick with rehiring a mate at the inn without leaving port is to get them at the same low rate. In Zagonos' case if you hire him at 10, allow him to leave and rehire him the cost could be higher. All mates have a range of three hire amounts, Zagonos' is 10/20/30 which is the lowest possible range.

I had all the ranges until Sandy wiped most of that out, but anyone that can be hired at 10 will have that same range. Anyway, just a picky little detail I thought should be mentioned...and you can only do that twice since the third hire will put them at 30 loyalty. 😀

Yup once they gain some experience they become more expensive. I also keep trying for lowest wage. The satisfaction of hiring someone for 10 golds a month is inexplicable.

Sorry about Sandy... maybe you could compile an updated guide seeing that the most complete one is probably Mikoz's and this forum has probably a few more useful tricks not included there.

Yeah, that range for Zagonos is his initial range. Before he gains any experience he will ask for one of those three amounts each time you hire him. Once he gains experience his range will increase. I AGREE 😀 , hiring a mate for 10 is very satisfying!

He has a pretty good faq, I can only think of a couple of things I don't like about it...one of which is that he says there are 49 discoveries in each game. I've seen that before in other places, so I don't know if he got that from there or if he "assumed" that since there are a total of 98 discoveries each game would have half. That was one of the reasons I played the PC version in the first place, but in about a dozen games on the PC I was able to find 50 discoveries per game...same as on the SNES version.

Anyway, it is still a pretty good faq...and the bad thing is that I hate to write! Although if you check some of my posts you might argue that point because of their length. :p There has been some progress that would warrant a new faq...and I hate the walkthrough portions of the faq. People seem to think that is the best way to play that main character, and even though I think he makes it clear that it is a summary and that they should use their own experience...quite a few anyway seem to follow it too closely.

That is one of the changes I wanted to make and call it a "runthrough" instead of a walkthrough. I was going to outline the fame requirements to trigger events for each character with a brief guide on what to do for them. Alas, all of those are gone except for a few that I've posted here...somewhere. Ernest is easy enough since he has two major events unless you count the dialogue changes when he enters the harbor.

Sorry to get so wordy.
