It is not science, but a calculated game play to maximize enjoyment by managing available resources.

I agree with the low level Navigators to begin with. When playing Joao, I usually go in this order: George Eggel, Anthony Morgan, Antoine Fitch, Cizzaro Fedeliti, Dante Peleira, Luka Ullman, Antonio Pintado ( for use as a first mate with his high intuition ), Henry Mancine, Al Fasi ( for his accounting when Enrio leaves - Zagonos Bei is good as well but Cairo is farther away), Gus Johnson, Cisco Alvarez, Ivan Soledad, Richard Huxley, Miguel Solis, and Lawrence Edwards. When the Navigators with Gunnery get to a high enough Seamanship, they get a Full Riggged ship, until then they can easily sail the Xebecs. I do not use Domingo as a captain if I can avoid it, the skill levels gained by a captain are better used by a navigator with Gunnery for later in the game.

Agree mainly. However I also steer clear from mates with less than 50 luck as they are accident prone. I prefer mates from cafe now that I know the trick of treat before hire to max loyalty. I now try to do the 2 calendar months sailing once I hire ahmet glanie, luka ullman, miguel solis and Lawrence Edwards to try max their loyalties too. Otherwise I stick with George eggel, gus Johnson, dante paleira, antione fitch, cizzaro, fritz Ramsey.

That makes 10 mates plus 1 which comes with scenario. I don't bother getting gunnery mates coz I always duel and capture though I can see the appeal of sinking all in sight. Particularly with the PC version you are invincible when parrying when equipped with Errol plate, just makes it the logical approach.

with regards to book keeper in Joao's scenario i don't see the point of Al fasi as Enrico doesn't leave till the Massawa incident is resolved anyway and Massawa is just next to Cairo where we can get Zaganos for 10 gc a month. Unless I am missing something?

Just on the same vein, who do you all hire as book keepers for each scenario?

You make a very good point about Zagonos, but Fasi will be at 100 Knowledge by the time Enrico leaves. Bei will take a few levels to get there and at that point most voyages are long term, a few levels may get skipped.
Antoine Fitch may even prove to be ok. I hire him early as a captain, he is replaced by a mate with Gunnery when their seamanship is high enough, and I no longer trade at that point in the game.

Is there a post or other information on how to read those emulator files on the PC to be able to manipulate them? I finally downloaded it and now I have 3 venues to play it on: origial SNES, Wii, and finally my PC.

Just search for New Horizon, some people made FAQs on how to modify the game using an hex editor.

Regarding Al Fasi and Zaganos Bei, I often end up with Bei as my bookkeeper because I get him late enough that he isn't automatically given a ship when capturing ships. It is aggravating to have to re-assign Enrico all the time, and it isn't easy to raise his seamanship high enough to be of any benefit.

Both are recruited in the lodge/inn, so their loyalty is low to start. Al Fasi has sufficient stats that he could captain a ship after a while, so if you get him early you can use him that way. I try to have about a dozen mates recruited before I recruit my bookkeeper.

In Pietro's scenario he can use Camillo, Salim will work for Ali (but isn't necessary), and the rest have to be recruited. Probably one of the three mentioned: Fitch, Fasi, or Bei.

Any information that I provide is based on the SNES version unless otherwise specified. I have thousands of hours into New Horizons and I have played it since it was released in the US on the SNES.

Excellent point about reassigning job duties, Chaoyun2k. I use Bei often too as he's not much good for anything else. I know some ppl like to beat-hire Simon Sakeira or Santana for that job. Any thoughts if it's worth the trouble?

The first thing I think about is that Negotiation doesn't seem to work the way it should, at least as far as I could tell in the SNES and the PC versions. Still, it doesn't hurt to have more skills (like Pilly).

It seems that Simon was such a hassle to get that I only did that once...and I don't really remember much about it except that there is a few interesting things about him.

I'd probably go for Ortega before I would Santana, but if I attack-hire someone (besides Khayr or Idin) it is usually one of the Turkish merchants: Palah Abdul (always loved that reference to Paula), Malik Yasale, Marwan Hazan, or Yazid Shabaz. Palah has the same skills that Simon does, and even though his seamanship is a bit lower all the other stats are about as good or better.

The Italian merchants don't have accounting (), and the Dutch merchants have mostly terrible stats. Colin Lowe is alright (from the English fleets) and Eastman has the same skills as Simon...but his stats are not that good for what you have to do to try to get them and then what you have to pay them.

Just my two cents worth, not that there is anything wrong with trying to get any of those mates.

Thanks for that. Says in a FAQ that Simon's levels are 'progressive with the main character', and his level will increase 'whether he earned it or not'. Haven't manage to elicit that myself though to me I just want good seamanship above all if he's gonna be captain and good knowledge? if he's bookkeeping as I don't think the illegal navigation and battle level increase actually result in improving other stats.. probably will try experimenting on Simon soon.

I think that is what I didn't like, the auto level increases without improved stats...but again it has been a while since I did that with Simon.
