I barely got started with testing how much they ask for, but I am guessing that they ask for more. Based on some of the testing I have done, I'm guessing that if their sailing level plus their battle level totals certain amounts they will ask for more...so you would have a few levels to play with.

Miguel will always be found in the inn/lodge, unless he is part of a "job" you are working on...for example a collect debt mission or a find item mission. You still won't be able to treat him to increase his loyalty, just that you will probably have to ask the waiter at the pub/cafe to get him to appear.

Anyway, it is possible to get Miguel to 30 loyalty if you can get him to ask for a raise before leaving port, hire him a second time and get him to ask for a raise again and hire him for a third time. Of course you do have to refuse the raises, but once he gets past 30 he won't ask and you can't get the ten bonus for hiring him.

Sorry, rambling again, in short yes it is possible if you raise their levels you will have to pay them more when you hire them to begin with.

Another possible solution, save your game and give your mate a raise of 100. Then try to give him another raise, if he refuses and says he is happy working for you, reload your game and try 90 to see if you get the same response. If you don't get that response on the first attempt, reload and try 10 or 20 more to see if you will then get the refusal. If they refuse a raise they are at 100 loyalty. (wish I had thought about that earlier) 😀

Any information that I provide is based on the SNES version unless otherwise specified. I have thousands of hours into New Horizons and I have played it since it was released in the US on the SNES.

Personally, I like to keep the "cheap" mates. Except for Pilly, most of my mates are working for 10 or 20 per month.

Ya my solution used to be to stick everyone disloyal on a ship so they don't ask for a raise, swapping them for loyal mates when about to be attacked (or mooring some ships if not enough loyal mates), then on the 70 days experience gathering/ exploration trips they 'miraculously' become loyal... Saves a few pennies too for the misers like me except having to remember to change captain when being pursued by Khayr is a pain...

Yesterday I was switching my mates around when I started buying Atakabunes and I realised that Joao doesn't have to be captain directly. When you give his ship to a mate without a job, he becomes commander. I guest the first mate becomes the captain. Does it mean that if he's more powerful, the attacks are also more powerful?

I know that if the first mate has gunnery and isn't captain of another ship then his gunnery ability affects the flagship. I don't know if that answers your question, but that's all I can think of at the moment.

Haven't come across this too Igor you mean Joao is not appearing as captain of any ship? Did you check trough all your ships as the computer often automatically assigns the main character to one of the other ships when you assign someone else to take your flagship.

I didn't experiment with it so I don't know but I'd probably put my first mate to the job. I could try using Khayr since he's now part of my crew but his navigation skill is low.
BTW, I have Khayr as First Mate and Pilly as a bookeeper. I wish I could hack the game and Use Catalina as the main character with Otto as first mate, and Ali as the bookeeper. 😀

Haha with PC version its not too difficult to hack using hex editors. Certainly to get someone with identical skill as Ali or Otto is not too difficult but to get the actual ppl probably takes more tinkering. Will try when I get bored :p

Khayr doesn't seem to like Pietro.
I've started a new game and I cannot hire khayr-ad-Din. I spent 3 months waiting for him at the port of Algiers and he won't come out so I keep crushing everybody then go visit the King to complete some missions, come back and there he is with a brand new Venetian Galleass. I defeat him with a lot of trouble, start the same process, can't find him anywhere until he suddenly appear as a pirate in Algiers.
Recently I fought Idin Leis with his fleet of 10 VG with 3200 crew vs mine with 2 Tekkoussen (150, 60), and 5 Atakabune (60, 90, 90, 90, 90).
Toward the end I'm left with 3 ships with 0 crew, 3 more with 40, 45, 50 and my flagship with 53 crew. Idin Leis head for my ship with 200 crew but with 13 durability left on his hull. I've already soiled myself thinking he's going to board my flagship but he asks for a duel so I defeated him. :O
I had to spend 8 days recruiting new men.
That battle was exciting but I wish I could recruit Khayr because I usually do it in all my games. 🙁

What is the deal to get Pilly Reis to join Joao in the SNES version? What level does Joao have to be in order to have enough experience?
