Khair-ad-Din, Idin Leis, Ulgu Ali, Jacob Walweik and others - constant characters. After a defeat they can appear again by the ships or expect the time in one of ports. All three named - bad navigators, as at all have no abilities to navigation. Unique advantage - wide experience in artillery. There is no sense to give them the ship after hiring. Mohammed Syarook also concerns to number of the unimportant navigators, however he never occurs in structure of new fleet and gets over from one port in another. Many from the pirates in game - ridiculous dealers.

One more interesting character. And what for only to him such strong fleet, when navigation and skill of attack on zero?

He's a game generated NPC that you cannot find for a few years. They usually end up having terrible stats, and come from countries that are doing really well in their sphere-of-influence. They make GREAT targets.

Zaganos has always been one of my favorites, but he is so rebellious...always wanting a raise. I found out how to fix that when I was testing loyalties on the SNES.

On the SNES a mate's loyalty seems to drop every month end if it isn't at 100 when they are hired. Hiring mates in the lodge always results in a mate with 10 loyalty (unless you are re-hiring them). Since that loyalty is going to fall, just sail for two month ends and they will be at 100 loyalty. In the SNES when loyalty falls below zero, it becomes 100.

So, if you hire someone from the lodge on the 30th of the month, sail (or only stop at supply ports) until the end of the next month, and viola you should have a mate with 100 loyalty on the first day of the second month. Depending on what day you hire them you can sail (pass time) for as little as 32 days or as much as 62 days.

Any information that I provide is based on the SNES version unless otherwise specified. I have thousands of hours into New Horizons and I have played it since it was released in the US on the SNES.

Thx for the good info Chaoyun2k, I always used to think after bringing the mates out for a 70 day sail they became loyal becaused of shared experience somewhat like a team building summer camp effect, didn't realise it's the other way round ie bottoming out loyalty causing a glitch! How naive of me haha.

I set out to prove just that, that it was a team building effort...So it isn't just you, I was very surprised to learn that.

By the way I tried a lot of things to lower a mate's loyalty and didn't find anything that lowered the loyalty after it reaches 100 (even when it became 100 by dropping).

It's almost too much trouble now to get those guys from the lodge especially now I have discovered the secret of 15 treats before hiring from cafe.

Also just wonder if the mate's loyalty is not rock bottom as they asked for pay rise, presumably sailing for 2 calander months isn't going to max out their loyalty. Any tricks you could share Chaoyun2k to solve this? Perhaps deliberately try to lower loyalty first before the 2 calander months trip?

The only thing that I could find to lower loyalty is month end changes. So, if you hired someone from the cafe and their loyalty drops it is only because you didn't treat them at least 15 times before hiring them.

If you hired someone from the inn/lodge, their loyalty is going to be 10 because everyone starts at zero and everyone increases by 10 when you hire them. I haven't tested the amount of raises that would be needed to raise their loyalty by much. What I have tested is that agreeing to the increase when they ask only gains 1 loyalty, but I haven't checked every mate and every level from 10 - 100 in loyalty.

I did enough testing using the mates from the cafe to know that they will only ask for a raise once their loyalty falls to or below 30. What I didn't get around to testing was if there was a level that would always cause the to leave you when a battle started.

Nothing that I have checked except the end of the month event seems to lower loyalty. Not having the funds to pay their wages didn't seem to have any additional effect. Sailing without food and water didn't seem to have any effect on their loyalty.

If you by chance miscounted the number of treats and hired someone after 14 treats when they needed 15, their loyalty will fall from 94 (6x14 plus 10 for hiring) at about 6 or 8 points per month. You probably won't even know it until they reach 30 loyalty (about 8-10 months). At that point, if they ask for a raise, you are probably better off to refuse and then run to the cafe and treat them 15 times to make sure you have 100 loyalty. Remember there are some mates that only need to be treated 3 times total to be hired at 100 loyalty.

Sorry, I didn't mean to run on and on, and the short of it is that there really isn't anything you can do to make loyalty fall faster (that I have checked yet). You could give them a cheap ship and enter battle and hope they leave you. If you want them back it is just a matter of finding them again.

Thanks for the detailed reply. So just wondering if mates like Miguel Solis - do they keep appearing in inns even after being fired eg not given their demanded wage rise or leaving in a battle? Also if you helped level say Alonso up a few levels then he leaves, next time you hire him he's not going to ask for 10gc a month now is he? Just wondering...
