In my current game I have Joao and I just defeated Catalina with 3 LaReale (120, 80, 80 crews), and 3 Light Galleys (10,10,10 crews). I stole two of her laReale and now I only have this kind of ship + 1 light Galley.
At first I didn't have enough crew to engage her so she stalked me in the Middle East, India and China. At one point her fleet was one ship distance of mine and I had to go around an island in the Strait of Bering to lose her. That was stressful and fun!
On my way back I crushed Idin Leis and sold two of his Venetian Galleass so i'm having a good game, I also have Pilly Reis as my First Mate.

Well I cheated to get Pilly but the rest was honest.
What I didn't mention is that my battle against Idin Leis was costly. I didn't lose any ships but half of them were without crew and my used LaReale had about 24 left in durability, that's why I enjoyed it!
I didn't get to sink the flagship but my good friend George Eggel sent him at the bottom of the sea. Of course afterward I invited him at the cafe for several rum treats and I gave him an expensive brooch for his favorite woman at the, ahem, courtesan house in Lisbon. 😀

I think in my next game I'll try using only Kansen and Atakabune, that should be fun and stressful.

One thing I noticed is that I have a harder time fighting Khayr-ad-Din when he has a fleet of Galleons. The destructive power seems greater with them than with Venetian Galleasses even though they are equipped with normal cannons. Did someone else noticed that?

I like the Atakabune, but they do have lower hull strength.

If you think about it, the Galleon has 40% more firepower than the VG and Khayr has some high battle levels with the gunnery skill, so you would see a lot more damage from a Galleon. Actually, I don't remember seeing Khayr with Galleons before...but I can see why it would seem to be more destructive. (That just means it has been a long time since I've played the type of game where I would have seen him with Galleons).

In the early game I was attacking galleon fleets for all countries and the temporary pirates but now no one seems to own Venetian Gallaeses in their fleets anymore just when I need them. I think it has been mentioned that Flemish galleons and light galley fleets get replaced by VG, and carracks by galleons. Just didn't think attacking galleon fleets all the tine could make VG fleets extinct. Anyone encountered the same phenomenon?
